Should you be concerned about toxicity? Absolutely. We virtually live in a sea of pollutants. They are present in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. We absorb pollutants in the products we use, the building materials in our houses, cars, and that's just the start. We are also exposed to many naturally occurring toxic substances. We are dealing with far more toxins than our bodies can handle.
- The Environmental Defense Council reports that more than 4 billion pounds of toxins are released into our environment each year, of which 72 million pounds are known carcinogens. This is an interesting correlation when you consider that 10.9 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 6.7 million of these cases are fatal.
- Studies have identified a total of 167 hazardous compounds in the blood and urine of American adults, including 76 known to cause cancer, 94 that are toxic to the nervous system, 82 that damage the lungs, 86 that affect hormone function, and 79 that cause birth defects.
- A 2003 study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed the presence of 116 chemicals - some of them banned for more than two decades because of toxicity - in people of all ages.
- A study conducted in 2005 by the Environmental Working Group found 287 industrial chemicals, pollutants, and pesticides in babies' umbilical cords. Of these toxins, 180 are known to cause cancer and 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system. Babies born today are already highly toxic coming into this world. Studies have also found high levels of metals such as cadmium and mercury in the breast milk of nursing mothers.
- Chemical exposure is considered to be contributing to the increasing incidence of autism, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and attention hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
- According to a recent report by the National Research Council, it is estimated that 70,000 of the chemicals in commercial use today have not been tested for their neurologically toxic effects.
- In 2003, 2,200 tons of depleted uranium were dumped in Iraq, leaving millions of Iraqis affected. Hundreds of thousands of United States soldiers have reported serious medical problems and increased birth defects in their newborn babies.
